Weekend in Pictures - Birthday Edition

My nephew celebrated his 5th birthday this weekend and my sister threw a killer party for him, complete with pizza, puppies and pie fights.

Baseball themed. Natch.

If there's one thing all pregnant women love, it's being poked in the belly.

Yay! Cute puppies!

Yay! Cute babies!

Ready! FIGHT!!!

Director of activities.

How did we never play this game in college?

Dignity is overrated.

Cheetos perms gone bad.

You have no idea what just happened, but trust me, you won.

Dear god when will these fools stop.

Ewwwww, a piece of grass in my hair.

I could get used to this look.

Two by Four

We celebrated FOUR years of twin living with these two beauties today. Wow.

More to come on the festivities, but I will say the event included Great Great Aunt Patty... blindfolded... and swinging a baseball bat. Yeah, it was that kind of party.

Eliana Quinn

The only time I was separated from Julie was when they wheeled her into the operating room.
It only lasted a few minutes, but it felt like an eternity.

I thought regular deliveries were intense. They're nothing compared to a c-section.

Moments after delivery. Eliana has never been louder.

I LOVE that, much like a Taco Bell drive thru,
the hospital has instructional posters hung in the operating room.

Eliana may be our most chill baby, yet. Julie, are you sure you don't want more?

This is Amelia's life calling. And even the phlegmatic Truman can't hide his fascination.

There is no prouder big brother on the planet.

Good friends of ours were two doors down with their new son Dominic.
With nurses visiting every three minutes, smuggling beer into the room was no easy task.

So sweet. So calm.

Eliana has fully claimed her mum.

You'd think we'd brought home a puppy or something...

Happy 65th Birthday, Sheila!

I just wanted to take a moment to wish my cousin Sheila a happy 65th birthday. And show off to the world what she's wearing to bed these days. (Sheila, if that's a problem, you know Reg is behind this...)

Happy birthday, Sheila!

Resume Material

I just turned 34 and apparently I still have talents that until now had gone undiscovered. For example, I had no idea that my big, fat, bald head made such a perfect backdrop for shadow puppeteering. Sweet.

Quickie

Side note: My wife just completed an actual blog post. Check it out. Who knows how long it will be until she posts again. And yes, I saw the movie Footloose for the first time in 2009.

  • Big Love returns tonight. Oh Nicki, where will your crazed little mind lead you this year...
  • The Christmas tree came down yesterday.
  • Darwin checked in at 16 lbs. 9 oz. at his four month check up. Puts him in 75th percentile in height, weight and noggin size. Truman may get his comeuppance sooner rather than later.
  • Jameson rediscovered his cowboy hat. He spent the morning running around the house as The Renowned Sheriff J.J. - World Famous Hero of the World. He knew we were in trouble because he saw us on the news and he came to help.
  • Remember that little Wii problem? I totally fixed that bitch. Sort of. I took the busted Wii completely apart. Stared blankly at its electronic guts. Put it back together. And it magically started working again. How do you like dem apples, Hools?
  • I celebrated my 33rd birthday. Laser tag is now the official annual birthday tradition. I kicked ass. Amelia has been singing "Happy birthday, choo-choo" ever since.
  • I still have more pictures to post from December. At this rate I should get a chance to tell you all about my 2010 resolutions by St. Patrick's Day.

Terrible Times Two and the Velvet Failure

A couple of weeks ago Truman and Amelia turned two. I would say that so far they are both living up to the Terrible Two moniker. As expected, they are each taking different approaches to their reign of terror.

One of Truman's many nicknames is "Truminator" and it's fitting his two year old personality quite well. If something can be broken, spilt, crushed, thrown, knocked over, eaten, ripped, dismantled or otherwise ravaged, Truman is focused on it like a laser. He has an antagonistic relationship with any and all objects at rest.

Amelia is taking a different route. What she lacks in destructive force she makes up for in unbridled independence and defiance. She thinks she's twenty-two and has little need for parents or older brothers interfering in her day-to-day pursuits. From teeth brushing to diaper changes and car seat buckling to eating there is only one thing to remember with Amelia -- SHE DOES NOT NEED YOUR HELP. Should you attempt to intervene, be prepared for a spectacular verbal onslaught of "NO!" and "STOPPIT!" I lose sleep over the thought of what she'll be like as a teenager.

The one area where Truman and Amelia are on the same page is bedtime. Unfortunately, the page they are on is "How Not to Go to Sleep at All Costs." This one has me stumped. Up until recently, Truman and Amelia had been extremely easy to put down for bedtime and naps. No fussing. No complaining. Just walk in, put them in bed and walk out. Now all of a sudden, bedtime is an outrageous ordeal. No matter how tired they are, they will not go to sleep at night. They'll carry on. They'll get out of bed. They'll get in each other's beds. They'll go into Jameson's room. I've seen Amelia start to fall asleep at the dinner table yet fight sleep for over an hour once I put her in bed. It's only slightly maddening. On the bright side, it's so exhausting that I easily fall asleep at night right after they do.

Jameson didn't really have a terrible two stage. Julie and I both thought that with Jameson three was a much tougher age than two. Knowing that, I am not sure if I should be relieved or scared. Maybe Truman and Amelia are getting it out of their system earlier than Jameson did. On the other hand, maybe this is just some grotesque harbinger of the insanity to come when Truman and Amelia reach age three.

On a side note, I baked a cake for Truman and Amelia's birthday. Since we needed two cakes, I asked my mom to bake a second one for me. But it was more than just a simple confectionary request. I basically challenged her to make the exact same recipe I was making. In general, this challenge is a joke because she can bake circles around me. In this particular case it was futility at it's finest since the recipe of choice was actually one of her specialties: Waldorf-Astoria red velvet cake. I've never tasted one as good as hers and I've never made one much more than edible. Comparing our two cakes was almost laughable.

On Top of Things as Usual

Just a few more photos from Jameson's birthday (a month ago). The first picture captures a bit of the baby boom that's happened in our family in the last few years. Just wait until the extended family camping trip next fall. It's going to be insane. (And I can't wait.)

The bottom two photos are of Jameson riding around on his birthday present from Mom and Dad. Amelia and Truman, as you can see, were more than willing passengers.

Edit: From left to right in this photo we have Jameson, Andersen (cousin), Amelia, Truman, Ava (cousin) and Darwin.

Mexican Karate MILF

Happy birthday, Julie. How does it feel to be 24? (And have four kids?) You're wiser, more beautiful and smart assier than ever. Each year you further reaffirm that getting you to marry me was one of the single greatest upsets in the history of mankind. To honor the passing of another year I present a sampling of your refinement to the readers of this blog (and anyone who does a Google search for "Mexican karate MILF").

(Mexican karate MILF, Mexican karate MILF, Mexican karate MILF)

Happy Birthday!

(Don't hurt me.)
